Women who
challenged their assigned place (home, convent, brothel) as it was established
by conduct manuals and the moral literature of the time faced being criticized
by society. This also applies to women writers who professed opinion and
were vocal in the public domain. We are seeking papers that study not only
the work of male authors and their portrayal of women out of place (picaresque
for example) but also the work (or recorded actions in historical archives)
of women who behaved contrary to socially accepted norms.
