TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Literature

I have taught a wide variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, specializing in:

  • Twentieth Century Literature: Surrealism and the Avant-garde, Modern Novel, Poetry, Marguerite Yourcenar
  • Narratology
Language

I have taught language courses at all levels, specializing in:

  • Third-year grammar and composition
  • A four semester Web-based Reading French course I designed
  • Technology Assisted Language Learning courses at the undergraduate and graduate level
In addition to regular courses, since 1997, I have been heavily involved in a wide variety of teaching-related activities which go beyond my regular teaching duties and constitute a specialization sui generis. These activities concern the professional development of teachers at the K-12 and post-secondary levels and more generally the training of teachers of second languages to assist them in integrating technology, especially the Internet, into their teaching practice.

This activity began with the Alberta Language Learning Environment (ALLE) project, which I co-directed with Esther Enns and which has now been expanded with a successful bid for major funding to create a Language Research Centre (LRC) at the University of Calgary. My work in this regard can be divided into four main areas:

  • With ALLE, I designed and was principal presenter at a score of "Web workshops for language teachers".
  • With ALLE and the LRC, I worked on various contracts with Alberta Learning in the area of teacher training and on-line language learning.
  • I have been invited to give presentations at teachers' conventions
  • I have developed web materials to complement professional development
  • I have received invitations by French government agencies (External Affairs, Embassies and Alliances françaises), and foreign universities to give seminars and workshops to teaching personnel.
