Daniel J. Maher
A specialist in French
Seventeenth-Century Literature, I have been teaching at the University of
Calgary since 1994. I study narrative strategy, utopian texts and préciosité (a
women’s movement particularly active in the 1650s). I am a co-investigator on a
SSHRC Standard Research Grant awarded in 2011, “L’Analyse
du récit à l’ère de l’Internet,” with colleagues in Montreal, Hamilton and
Victoria. I am also
working on a book manuscript,
Prendre le roman par la queue: stratégies
narratives chez Michel de Pure.
July 2011-June 2014 - Associate Dean (Interdisciplinary Programs),
Faculty of Arts
I am responsible for administering
and promoting Interdisciplinary programs in the Faculty of Arts. A major part
of my responsibilities in the first year will be conducting a comprehensive review
of all our interdisciplinary programs in the context of the
consolidated Faculty of Arts. We aim to ensure our programs continue to foster student
success and that they take full advantage of the range of teaching resources
available across the Faculty.
November 2008 to June
2010 - Interim Dean, Faculty of
Humanities
The Faculty had 123
full time appointments, over 1400 undergraduate and graduate students, 17,000
course enrolees and an annual budget of approximately $17 M.
My primary
responsibility was to help advance the high quality of teaching and research in
the Faculty. Among my responsibilities, I dealt with matters related to
appointments, promotions, tenure and salary reviews. I oversaw the preparation and implementation
of the Faculty budget and Business Plan and looked at all possibilities for
supporting our core activities (government funding, revenue generation,
fundraising, accessing grants etc.). I also engaged in a number of outreach
activities in the community. I was part
of the Transition Team that established the new consolidated Faculty of Arts
and had particular responsibility for student issues and consolidation of
program regulations for the calendar.
July 2008 – Nov. 2008 -
Associate Dean (Development and
Research), Faculty of Humanities
I was responsible for
promoting research in the Faculty. I consulted with new faculty members on
getting their research programs started (internal and external funding,
networking, etc.). I managed the
Faculty’s Career Development Awards and Teaching Development Awards.
July 2005-June 2008 Associate Dean (Academic Programs and
Student Affairs), Faculty of Humanities
I was responsible for
the introduction of new programs and the ongoing review and renewal of existing
programs in the Faculty of Humanities. I liaised with other faculties on the
simplification of academic regulations and on student life. I oversaw student advising and was involved
in various recruitment and retention activities.
