The Subjunctive
The subjunctive is not a tense,
but a mood. Within
the subjunctive mood, there are different tenses: the present, the passé
composé, the imperfect and the pluperfect. Here we only consider
the present subjunctive.
The Present Subjunctive is much more common in French than its equivalent
in English. It is required after certain expressions and subordinating
Conjunctions.
For verbs with an infinitive in -er, most forms are the same
as the Present Indicative. In other cases, forms are usually similar, except
for some irregular verbs. Forms which are different from the Indicative
are italicised in the following tables. The subjunctive is usually given
with an introductory que in grammar books because it is almost always introduced by que.
