Target Audience

French 235 is designed for both beginning students with no previous knowledge of French, and so-called false beginners who may have one or two years high-school French.  If you are a false beginner, you  will probably find the first few lessons easy.  Do them anyway as revision, and expect more challenging work very soon.

Content

In French 235, you will learn some simple strategies for understanding French texts, the fundamentals of French grammar, and a basic vocabulary. At the end of this part of the course, you will have read several dozen texts in French, of varying lengths, navigated to many French Web sites and performed a variety of tasks there.

Outcomes

Students who successfully complete French 235 should have a fair level of confidence when reading simple French texts and visiting Web sites for information.  They will be able to read for general understanding, with considerable help from a dictionary, simple authentic texts which are narrative (stories) or informative (encyclopedia or newspaper articles, recipes, book titles, instructions, etc.).  They will be able to perform tasks based on their understanding of these texts, including finding main ideas and summarizing.

Term Work

This is a self-study course which you can do at your own pace, but you must complete the work for each lesson by the deadline indicated on the Overview page. Completing the work means going through the different components of the lesson (Reading Strategies, Grammar, Text, Web Activities), doing Notebook work in the electronic notebook, and adding around 20 entries to your personal Vocabulary list. More information on this, as well as about grading, is available on the Help page, which you can access from here or by clicking on the Help icon in the Blue Side Menu.

Lessons are organized as follows:

    1.    Preliminary Work
    2.    Reading
    3.    Web Activities

The Preliminary Work is designed to give you tools with which you can carry out the activities on the Web.  In French 235, these tools include reading strategies and information about vocabulary and grammar (how French words fit together to create meaning).  The preliminary work is contained in separate Web pages, and  accompanied by exercises to allow you to practice what you have learned.

The Reading Activities give you simple authentic texts to read, to widen your exposure to written French.  The texts are graded to correspond to your level, and you should be able to understand almost everything without a dictionary, using the help provided.  The Web Activities require you to visit authentic Web sites in French and perform various tasks.  In French 235, you are a tourist, visiting francophone countries, and the information you gather will relate to these visits.  When doing the Web Activities, try to explore more than is absolutely necesary for doing the work.  The more exposure to French you have, the faster you'll progress.
