If you can, comment on flexibility (can you do what you like or are you
restricted to one template or question format?), ease of use (is the interface
simple and intuitive?), and screen design (does it look appealing?) Were
there any annoying features or any bugs you noticed in the program? Was
it pedagogically sound and interesting to the student, and at what level?

WWW Based Exercises
The University of Victoria offers a free suite of templates for the Web,
called Hot Potatoes.
This is hot stuff, fairly easy to use, and has been adopted by over 4000
users worldwide (as of 99/04/22).
Wait for the ALLE group's templates, Listen and Learn, developed by
Bernard Rochet, Manfred Prokop and Terry Butler at the University of Alberta.

General Authoring Systems
Question Mark Demo - general evaluation
system for teaching purposes. An unlimited site license costs about
US$2000. They have a very informative Web site at questionmark.com.
Daedalus - Integrated Writing System
Guided Tour. This is a very popular package but also very
pricey, with a site license starting at about US$150 per terminal for a
large lab. Check out the homepage at daedalus.com.
Quest is a full-service authoring
package comparable with Authorware. Approximate cost is US$4000. Download
a demo of this program.
The CID Tools from Utah State are
under development. A very sparse manual
is available for download.

Adam & Eve - Creates exercises

Xcloze - Freeware cloze program for
DOS. Contains English data but recognizes French, Deutch, Italian, and
Spanish characters. Download Xcloze.
This program is written by Tim Johns of Birmingham University. Link

WordFill v2.01 "The acclaimed cloze
testing engine from Lingua Systems." Noted for having very extensive
hint/help features, both for student and instructor. Download

Cloze11 - Cloze11
download. An authorable cloze program.
Contexts DOS program Comes with
English data but could be used for any language. Download

Eclipse creates "rebuilding" exercises
from instructor-entered texts. Download

authorable but highly touted for its interface, which is based on neither

Markin allows
