Why Use the Web?

The Web is becoming an integral part of the educational scene.  But it is particularly important for second language learning.  Here are a few reasons:

  • there is an incredible amount of resource material
  • material is current
  • resources are authentic - text, audio, video, and images
  • hyperlinks and keyboard input provide interaction
  • students are motivated and self directed
  • screens are pleasant and varied
  • the learning environment is realistic

  • it allows for a unique celebration of student work.

Disadvantages of the Web

Despite its amazing possibilities, the Web is not without its disadvantages.  Here are a few to beware of:
  • sites may disappear from one day to the next
  • many sites are poorly done
  • you can get lost or confused by following too many links
  • accessing some sites can be very slow or they might not work at all
  • you can waste a lot of time searching for something
  • copyright is a not a simple issue

What Can I Use the Web for?
  • Find authentic information in the target language and have students look at it on line
    • Current affairs (newspapers and magazines on line)
    • Movies, Singers, Tourism, etc.
    • Songs, Videos, Pictures
  • Print this information out for use in class, with pictures
  • Assign students pages to visit and report on
  • Assign students "Activity Pages" to work through
  • Create your own pages with authentic materials
  • Create Jump Stations (pages of links) for your students

  • Get your students to prepare pages as a project
