I. In addition to Faculty requirements, the Department requires students:
- To have completed a baccalaureate degree (four year degree) or its equivalent from a recognized institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (based on a 4-point system) on the work of the last two undergraduate years (or graduate years, where applicable).
- To demonstrate a sufficiently high level of oral and written competence in the French or Spanish language.
- To have an adequate academic background in the discipline.
- To submit an example of the applicant's written work: a term paper, research paper of other writing which the applicant considers representative of his or her best work. The paper must be in either French or Spanish, depending on the language of study.
- A 250-word (minimum) statement of research interest including research topic and the reasons for wishing to pursue graduate work in this Department.
- Endorsement from the Head of the Department of French, Italian and Spanish to the effect that the applicant is, in all relevant respects, acceptable to the Department and that adequate supervision of the proposed program is available.
Note: All graduate programs have limited enrolment capacities. As a consequence, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
Applicants lacking the requisite background in language or literature may be admitted either as qualifying or probationary students. In this case, extra course work would normally be required. A qualifying oral examination based on set texts may be required before the students attain regular Master of Arts status. Courses taken as qualifying student do not normally count as part of the student's course requirements.
II. Required Documentation for an official application

- Application fee ($100. for Canadian residents - $130 for international students).
- Two sets of official transcripts of all academic institutions the applicant has attended or degree awarded since post-secondary studies began (provided by the post-secondary institution in a sealed envelope with the university stamp across the seal. If original transcripts are in a language other than English or French, the applicant must include both the original transcripts as well as a notarized word-for-word English translation.
- Three TWO confidential recommendations (in English, French or Spanish) on the specific U.of Calgary reference forms. Applicants must collect each reference in a sealed envelope with the referee's signature across the back and submit them with the rest of the application package OR instruct the referee to send it to the department directly.
- Students whose native language is not English are required to provide proof of proficiency in English by passing the TOEFL exam.
- An example of the applicant's written work: a term paper, research paper or other writing which the applicant considers representative of his or her best work. The paper must be in either French or Spanish, depending on the language of study.
Note: It is the responsibility of the applicant to forward these documents directly to the Graduate Program Administrator of the Department of French, Italian and Spanish, each in their original sealed envelope. All graduate programs have limited enrolment capacities. As a consequence, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
