Il Circolino is an integral part of the Major and Minor in Italian Studies programs. Students are expected to attend specific sessions during the week as part of their Italian courses. Here students also have an informal meeting place to further develop their language skills and to learn about the culture and activities of local and international Italian groups. Instructors or monitors are available in Il Circolino for approximately 3-5 hours per day.
Language Assistants are hired to help support the increasing number of students who study Italian. The Circolino is also a place where participants meet to organize special projects and group activities such as the student newsletter, talent show, etc.
Local community groups and the Government of Italy generously support the Circolino. Many cultural events and activities are organized at the UofC which help promote the Italian study programs to students as well as to the campus and City of Calgary communities.

El Centro de Tertulia (The Spanish Language Centre) has been in existence for more than 25 years. Its mandate is to support students and instructors of Spanish by providing a locale suitable for practice of the Spanish language and exposure to Hispanic cultures.
Students of all levels are expected to visit the Tertulia regularly to enhance their learning experience. The Centro is staffed by a language monitor who helps students improve their reading, writing and comprehension skills. The monitor will also arrange individual or group conversations in a social setting. Hands-on resources are available (print, audiovisual and electronic) which students access for course assignments and group projects.. At peak times there are 8-12 visitors in the room at one time.
The Centro de Tertulia is a valuable partner to the Aula Cervantes, the first centre of its kind to be opened in Canada by the Instituto Cervantes in Spain for the promotion and teaching of Spanish language and Hispanic cultures.
