On March 4th 2005, to mark the 50th anniversary of the prestigious Xavier Villaurrutía Award, Gaëtan Lavertu, Canadian Ambassador to Mexico, honoured Dr. Serge Zaïtzeff with a commemorative diploma. Dr. Zaïtzeff, the only Canadian to have won this recognition in Mexican literature, was awarded the prize in 1983 for his essay, El Arte de Julio Torri, an essay exploring the life and works of this modern Mexican poet and writer.
