BA Honours in French and Spanish

If you are already doing a Major in French or Spanish and you are planning to enter into higher degree programs, such as a Masters, or into a professional school, such as Law or Journalism, you should consider doing an Honours Degree.

To be admitted to the Honours program students must fulfil the following requirements:

  • being a registered Major
  • a grade point average of at least 3.30
  • the completion of at least five full-course equivalents

Prior to applying for an Honours Program, it is strongly recommended that you consult one of our Undergraduate Advisors as well as a Degree Advisor at the Student Success Centre to determine the courses remaining to complete your intended program.
Once you have met with a Degree Advisor, you will apply for an honours program through your Student Centre prior to the stated deadline for the program of interest.

Applications are considered at the time of Fall Session registration and must be made between March 1st and May 1st.

Following admission to the Honour Program students must consult the undergraduate advisor for approval of your course registrations and achieve a grade point average of at least 3.15 in the courses taken in the Major Field in each succeeding pair of sessions.

BA Honours, French

The requirements for a BA in French also apply to Honours students.
You have to take the same mandatory courses as French BA students. However, instead of 16 HCE, you need to take 20 HCE in French, including French 595 and 597 – normally restricted to students registered in the Honours Program - and two additional courses at the 500 level.
French 595 aims to improve your research skills and for French 597, you will write your Honours Thesis in French under the supervision of a department member. To graduate successfully, you must obtain a minimum grade of “B” in this course (“A-” for First Class Honours).

BA Honours, Spanish

The requirements for a BA in Spanish also apply to Honours students.
You have to take the same mandatory courses as Spanish BA students. However, instead of 16 HCE, you need to take 20 HCE in Spanish, including Spanish 593, 595 and 597. The last two courses are restricted to Honours students.
Spanish 593 is an introduction to literary theory; Spanish 595 aims to improve your research skills and for Spanish 597, you will write your Honours Thesis in Spanish under the supervision of a department member. To graduate successfully you must obtain a minimum grade of “B” in this course (“A-” for First Class Honours).
